"I don't think _time_ scrobbled should count [...]" Me neither. I mentioned it as a possible way to prevent abuse of the scrobbling system to gain levels, which would be very easy to do in more than one way.
As a matter of fact, I liked the site because it had no levels/experience whatsover and it didn't display the badges straight on the profile page. I was very unhappy with how miso used the badge system, which is very similar to malgraph's genre achievements, but it was still specific to some "key series" that "everyone" watched. Like if you've been watching "a lot" of Science Fiction (10+ episodes or so), it mentioned you missing Firefly in the badge's description - whether you watched it or not.
I'm not so sure about malgraph's genre achievements as well, at least from the tone. It would give the site a less humble or down-to-earth tone. But the general idea is ok, I think. Could be very well be integrated as badges that level up, as long as there is no mention of specific series in/on series unspecific badges.

Please don't add levels just for watching. You should rather focus on commnity activity and give experience to those that are active in there, writing reviews or shouts, replying and gettng likes for the reviews/shouts.

Gaining experience/levels from watching introduces the attitude of having to watch more just because you want to be on a higher level (which gains you and the site nothing but a higher level you can show off), which in turn could be the start of people abusing the scrobbling/check-in system and rendering views (and in turn levels) useless. And the scrobbling/check-in system can be easily abused, but abuse couldn't really be prevented if you're just looking on the running time from your sources, as the running time usually is in NTSC and/or with commercials and expects the longest uncut version. To prevent abuse in the check-in system, you'd had to disable check-ins until the current check-in has run out. With differing times for regions and without commercials, this could become a problem for honest viewers, as they can't check-in to the next when they're watching it, but have to wait until the site tells them they have stopped watching it. To prevent abuse by scrobbling a 5 minute video over and over again, you'd have to find out all running times for all regions in all versions - and that would be a too high amount of work. Or you could bind the levels to the amounts of minutes watched - but then you have the PAL/NTSC problem again, because the running time differs when running in 23,976fps or 25fps. You'd be putting people from PAL countries (like me) in a disadvantage just because they live there. You'd also put check-ins in an advantage because the running time there is always longer than the acutal running time. So how could you do this without the danger of abuse or disadvantage for non-us users or honest scrobblers? I honestly can't think of any way.

Gaining levels/experience from writing reviews/shouts (more from reviews than from shouts, of course) and getting likes for what you've written, for example, can bind the people doing this more to the site. Almost every other site has levels for watching, but I don't think any site has levels for reviewing. Do something that sets you apart from all the other sites out there, that will bind people from all regions to your site. The perhaps best way would be in this case writing or reading reviews. This could boost community activity, as it is currently very barren (considering it has almost 350k users but less than 0.1% are writing reviews). And I think this could use a boost more than the viewership.
